Background BIT Hospital Kasur:

After partition, Pakistan's healthcare system was very limited. It had only one medical school and few doctors. There were some military and civilian setups, but they were not enough. Over time, the system grew and now covers the entire country. It is divided into two parts: public and private healthcare.

Different levels of medical care were established from villages to cities. Villages had Basic health units (BHUs), towns had Tehsil headquarter hospitals (THQs) for more advanced care and Cities had district headquarter hospitals (DHQs) and teaching hospitals for specialized and advanced treatments.

There were much talk about the inefficiency of the public health system. The government blames state ownership but the real problem is the wilful inability to facilitate its dismantling. The system gets only 0.7 percent of GDP in the budget instead of the required 7 to 10 percent. This leads to huge shortages such as one nurse for 40 patients instead of the ideal four, and one doctor for 60 beds instead of one for seven. Lack of resources results in preventable deaths from diseases such as diarrhea, pneumonia, and tuberculosis, especially among children.
